Anjos was a Portuguese parish ( freguesia ) on the 2nd Bairro the capital Lisbon. The name of the village comes from this little church "Os Santos Anjos ". In Anjos is an outdoor swimming pool and a sports court.

Geography and population

She was surrounded by the neighboring communities Pena, São Jorge de Arroios, Penha de França, Graça, Santiago and Socorro. In the 0.49 km ² large community lived 9766 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

1147 the communities of Santa Justa and Rufina were established in the field of Anjos. In the 16th century Santa Justa was divided into the communities Anjos, Arroios, Pena, São José, São Sebastiao da Pedreira and Socorro. In the city archives to find records of a parish in Anjos 1564/69. Parish church was the former chapel Os Santos Anjos ( the Holy Angel ), which thus became the namesake of the municipality.

The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 resulted in large scale destruction to Anjos. During reconstruction, many new streets created. Looters were executed in the square of Santa Barbara. The space, formerly Largo das Fontainhas said, there are still today. From this "place of wells " fed sources to irrigate the surrounding fields.

End of the 19th century began the construction of new districts: Andrade, Inglaterra ( German England) and 1930, the Distrito de Novas Naçoes ( German New Nations ). Andrade is located behind the church of Anjos. It was named after the owner of the land Manuel Goncalves Pereira de Andrade. The roads in the district were given the name of the women of his family. Main road was the Avenue D. Amélia that. Since the establishment of the Republic Av Almirante Reis is called.

For district Inglaterra include the hills of Francavilla ( German France). He was formerly Brás Simoes, after the Lisbon merchant and owner of the built-up sites. The name was changed at the time of the First World War. The streets of the neighborhood are named after British cities such as Cardiff, Manchester and Liverpool and the British John Milton and Isaac Newton.

The district Novas Naçoes was called up to the April 25, 1974 Distrito de colonias ( German district of the colonies) and before 1967 Charca. The streets are named after the former Portuguese colonies in Africa. Here you will find the streets Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné, Ilha do Principe, Ilha de S.Tome, Macau, Mozambique, Timor and Zaire as well as the Largo dos Novas Naçoes.

On September 29, 2013 Anjos was disbanded as part of municipal reform the city of Lisbon as a community and part of the new community Arroios.
