Ankara Castle

The Citadel of Ankara ( Turkish Ankara Kalesi or Akkale ) was built by the Hittites as a military garrison in today's capital of Turkey and is located on a 978 m high hill, which lies in the northern part of the present city center of Ankara.

Over the centuries, the castle of different peoples and empires was used. As BC the Galatians in Anatolia appeared in 278, they made Ankara their capital. During this time the citadel was extended to two parts of the city ( inner and outer city). Of the former twenty towers of the outer city today only a few remain. The walls of the city, however, are well preserved until today.
