Anne Bignan

Anne Bignan ( born August 3, 1795 in Lyon, † November 27, 1861 ) was a French writer and translator.

Bignan published in 1819 three songs of the Iliad in French translation, which established its reputation as a translator of the works of Homer. The complete translation of the Iliad appeared in 1830, which was followed by the Odyssey 1841. Both works have been several times reprinted.

She became a member of the Société des bonnes lettres, the Académie française and the Académie des jeux floraux and in 1829 awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honour. Bignan wrote several novels and plays and published in 1850 a book of poetry.
