Ansar (Sudan)

Ansar followers of the Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad were called during the Mahdi uprising in the Sudan 1881-1899. Al- Ansar is an Arabic term which has been used in Islam, especially for the helpers / supporters of Muhammad from Medina.

1881 broke out in Sudan from the Mahdi uprising. The motivation of the Ansar was varied to join the Mahdi. While the formerly wealthy slave traders wanted to abolish the taxes and reprisals by the Egyptian occupiers followed him for the sake of his religious meaning large sections of the poor. After the defeat of the Urabi movement in Egypt to the Mahdi flocked to new followers. The Mahdi put the Dschibba firmly than typical clothing of his followers. He wanted to take action against the spread of the slope to luxury. The Dschibba consisted of a knee-length white shirt, ankle-length pants and a turban. Holes were repaired with patches.

The Ansar came mainly from the people of the Baggara. They were settled from 1885 to the new capital of the successor of Muhammad Ahmad Omdurman.
