Anselm Hollo

Paavo Anselm Hollo Aleksis ( born April 12, 1934 in Helsinki, † 29 January 2013) was a Finnish poet and literary translator. He lived in the United States of America since 1967; there he published under the name of Anselm Paul Alexis Hollo.

Life

Paavo Anselm Aleksis Hollos father was Juho Aukusti ( YES) Hollo ( 1885-1967 ), a professor of philosophy at the University of Helsinki, writer, essayist and leading translator into Finnish. His mother, Iris Antonina Anna Walden, was a music teacher. She is the daughter of the famous chemist Paul Walden.

Anselm Hollo lived for eight years in the UK, with his first wife, the poet Josephine Clare and her three children Hannes, Kaarina and Tamsin. He wandered in the late 1960s to the USA and lived with his new family in Boulder ( Colorado). He was married in second marriage with the artist Jane Dalrymple - Hollo.

Hollo has published over forty books of poetry own, his poetry was influenced by the Beat Generation. Hollo was an early translator of Allen Ginsberg into German. With Josephine Hollo he transferred the main work of William Carlos Williams, the five-volume poem Paterson, into German. Hollo translated from Swedish, Finnish, French and German into English.

In 1965, he stepped on the Underground Festival International Poetry Incarnation in London. He was appointed by poets and critics of the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York to Honor "non- elect " in 2001, as a sign against the appointment of Billy Collins to elect poets and poetry consultant to the Library of Congress ( the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the library of Congress).

Hollo taught creative writing at eighteen universities and colleges, including at the State University of New York Buffalo, the Iowa Writers' Workshop, the University of Colorado Boulder, since 1989 at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at the University of Naropa, where he was Associate Professor.

The composer and pianist Frank Carlberg has set to music of his work and the poet Ted Berrigan in New York and Alice Notley, Anselm Berrigan have named her son after him.
