Anselmo José Braamcamp

Anselmo José Braamcamp de Almeida Castelo Branco (* 1819, † November 13, 1885 ) was a politician from the period of the constitutional monarchy in Portugal. He was chairman of the Historical Party, and later the Progressive Party. He was inside and Finance and from 1879 to 1881 head of government of his country.

Life

Braamcamp, a lawyer and Freemason, was a faithful follower of the historical party and was built in 1851 for the first time as a deputy in the Cortes, elected the Portuguese parliament. First government experience he gained when he was until 1864 in the second government of the Duke of Loulé, the most important leader of the Party History, Home Secretary in 1862. In the period 1869-1870, the third government of the Duke of Loulé he was finance minister.

From 1871 to 1877 reigned in Portugal 's conservative regeneration Party ( government António Maria de Fontes Pereira de Melo ), the Historic party was in opposition. During this time the Duke of Loulé ( 1875) and died Braamcamp took over in his place the chair of the Historical Party and the function of opposition leader against Fontes Pereira de Melo. The following year, Bandeira and the Margrave of Sá died there. This was originally also a politician of the Historical party, but then had fallen out with the Duke of Loulé and leave you with some supporters of the Past Party, on its own, to establish the Reformist party. This, however, was tailored to the person of its chairman and therefore fell by the death Sá da Bandeiras in a crisis. It was the great merit Braamcamps that he succeeded, to reconcile the reformists with the historical party. The two parties united (1876 ) and called themselves the future the Progressive Party. This means that all forces in opposition to Fontes Pereira de Melo were united, the opposition had thereby greatly improved opportunities to end the Conservative government.

On May 29, 1879 was finally time: About a scandal that erupted over the relations of the Treasury with the overseas bank, plunged the second government Fontes de Melo. A few days later, on June 1, Braamcamp was appointed Prime Minister. His reign was short lived however. This was mainly because that Fontes de Melo could not come to terms with the loss of power and control for an uncompromising opposition politics against Braamcamp. He succeeded the Braamcamp government overthrow by a vote of no confidence and get yourself back into power. Braamcamp was again leader of the opposition, but died before he was able to win back control of the government for his party. His successor as party leader of the Progressive was José Luciano de Castro. This succeeded a year after the death Braamcamps to bring the Progressive Party again to the government.
