Description

The SPS -40 was derived from the AN/SPS-31 and replaced the AN/SPS-6 and AN/SPS-29 and was introduced in 1961. It has a digital MTI - mode, pulse compression, integrated IFF interrogator and special modes for low-flying targets. The first models were considered to be relatively unreliable, but this, however, changed with the introduction of more advanced versions. Variants

  • AN/SPS-40: The basic version, produced by Lockheed.
  • AN/SPS-40A: Slightly modified version, made by Sperry
  • AN/SPS-40B: From this variant IFF system is integrated. 43 systems were manufactured by Norden Systems.
  • AN/SPS-40C: Version with improved detection of low-flying aircraft and enhanced ECCM capabilities.
  • AN/SPS-40D: This is a modified version of the A - variant whose reliability could be significantly increased. It can also be integrated into the AN/SYS-1 combat system. It was produced by Westinghouse.
  • AN/SPS-40E: Although this version of Norden Systems has already brought to series production, the U.S. Navy suspended funding.

Meanwhile, a modernization of the E variant is offered, which replaces the analog traveling wave tubes with new, digital semiconductor components. This is intended to increase the performance and the reliability can be increased.
