Antal Szalay

Antal Szalay (* March 12, 1912, † 1960) was a Hungarian football player and football coach, with the Újpest FC won four league titles and the Mitropacup in the 1930s and with the Hungarian national team in 1938 World Championship runner.

Club career

Szalay came in the 1930/31 season to his first appearances in the first team of Újpest in the highest Hungarian league. Although he brought it this year, only four games in the Championship, but overtook the same time his first championship title. After that, he was on the position of the right slider to the Hungarian national team Ferenc Borsányi from the team and crowd out as the Violet could celebrate their next league title in 1933, he had long since become a regular player.

To Szalays strengths included his positional play, as well as his technical skills and his passing game. On the side of György Szűcs he belonged in the 1930s to permanent staff of the team from the fourth district of Budapest. 1935 was the team, which included László Sternberg and Stefan Auer, to win another title and Szalay was elected at the end of the season player of the year. After second and third places in the years to finally succeeded in 1939 again to finish the season at the top. Thus, the team was allowed to start for the Mitropacup, where they reached the final by beating the AS Ambrosiana Inter and the Beogradski SK against city rivals Ferencvaros and there remained successful with a total score of 6:3.

Szalay 1940 left his hometown club and ended his career with the all- TE.

National

In September 1933 Szalay was the first time the dress of the Hungarian national team, when he made together with György Gyula Lázár Sárosi and the runner series with a 3-0 win over Switzerland. From this time he took the right half position regularly and also belonged to the team that beat the English in Budapest in 1934 with 2:1. Also at the World Championships in 1934, he was part of the squad but had to leave István Palotás the space on the right side and only came in the quarterfinal defeat by Austria as a left half- used.

Although Szalay could reclaim the space for about a year after the World Cup, but in the following years the Hungarians used a number of different players in the right position without that one was able to secure a regular place. After the left runner Lázár came when qualifying match for the World Cup 1938 against Greece on this position for use, he also started the first game of the Endturniers on the right side. After that, the team management decided but, again Szalay use and Lázár issue back to the left side. Szalay played in all other games of the World Cup, including the final defeat against Italy.

After the World Cup he came only to two more international games and ended his international career in August 1939 against Poland after a total of 24 missions.

Coaching career

After the end of World War II Szalay began his coaching career in Romania, where he oversaw the ITA Arad and FC Craiova. After that, he worked for U.S. Carrarese and Pro Patria Calcio in Italy. After a sponsoring activities in Luxembourg, he still took the Australian club St George -Budapest.
