Antarctic Specially Managed Area

A Specially Managed Area Antarctic ( Antarctic Specially Managed Area English - ASMA ) is a protected area within the scope of the Antarctic Treaty south of 60 ° south latitude. Annex V (protection and management of areas ) of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, according to " each area, including any marine area, where it already activities can be carried out [ ... ] be called a Specially Managed Area Antarctic, so that the planning and coordination of activities supported, the environmental impact can be kept to a minimum to avoid possible conflicts, improve co-operation between the Parties or ". In contrast to specially protected areas ( Antarctic Specially Protected Area - ASPA ) particularly managed areas may be entered without permission.

Each Contracting Party, the Environment Committee, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research and the Commission for the Conservation of Marine Living Resources, Antarctic are entitled to propose areas for designation as ASMA by submitting a management plan of the ATCM Antarctic Treaty. The management plan should contain an accurate description of the area (geographic coordinates, constraints, access, etc.) and its assets to be protected. It will set out a code of conduct for activities in the area.

In 2012, there were seven in Antarctica particularly Managed Areas.
