Anthony Aveni

Anthony Francis Aveni ( born March 5, 1938) is an American astronomer and historian of astronomy ( archaeoastronomy ).

Aveni doctorate in astronomy at the University of Arizona and is Russell B. Colgate Professor of Astronomy and Anthropology at Colgate University, where he has been since 1963. He is considered one of the founders of Mesoamerican archaeoastronomy among the Maya and Aztecs. Aveni wrote numerous books, appeared on many television programs and is a frequent public lectures (for example, regularly in planetariums worldwide and on cruise ships ). He currently resides (2008) in Hamilton (New York).

In addition to Mesoamerican archaeoastronomy he also studied, for example, the Nazca Lines and Astronomical traditions of the Pacific region and techniques of navigation in Polynesia. He also wrote children's books such as "The First Americans" ( 2005).

For his teaching he received several awards, including 1982 he became National Professor of the Year of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in the United States.

For his Mesoamerican studies, he was awarded the 2004 HB Nicholson Award from the Peabody Museum of Harvard University.
