Anthony Petro Mayalla

Anthony Petro Mayalla ( born April 25, 1940 in Nera, Mwanza, Tanzania; † August 19, 2009 in Mwanza, Tanzania) was Archbishop of Mwanza.

Life

Anthony Mayalla studied at Loyola University Chicago, USA, and received in Ibindo on 20 December 1970, the ordination.

Pope John Paul II appointed him in 1979 for the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Musoma, a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mwanza. He received his episcopal consecration on 22 April 1979, the Archbishop of Dar -es- Salaam, Laurean Cardinal Rugambwa; Co-consecrators were his predecessor John James Rudin MM and Renatus Lwamosa Butibubage, retired Bishop of Mwanza. 1987 he was appointed the fourth Archbishop of Mwanza.

Mayalla was the founder of Weil Bugando Medical Centre ( WBMC ) in Mwanza and the St. Augustine University of Tanzania ( SAUT ). He was a member of the Supervisory Board of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa ( CUEA ). From 1983 to 1989 he was chairman of the Tanzanian Episcopal Conference ( Tanzania Episcopal Conference, TEC ).

Anthony Mayalla died of a heart attack in office.
