Antimony ( III, V ) oxide, and antimony (III) antimonate (V) or diantimony tetroxide is an antimony compound having the empirical formula Sb2O4. It belongs to the class of oxides. Diantimony tetroxide is a white, yellow in the heat powder which is insoluble in water.

Occurrence

In nature, antimony ( III, V ) oxide is present in form of the mineral Cervantite. Localities include in Romania, Bolivia and Spain.

Production and representation

Antimony ( III, V ) oxide are formed in several ways. Antimony ( V) oxide is converted at 800 ° C under oxygen delivery in order diantimony tetroxide. It is, however, not to melt the compound.

And antimony (III ) oxide, diantimony tetroxide is produced when it is heated above 500 ° C in air.

Properties

In antimony ( III, V ) oxide, no tetravalent ions are present, but it is a composite oxide of antimony (III) - and antimony ( V) oxide. The name commonly used antimony (IV ) oxide is therefore chemically not entirely correct.

There are two modifications, α - and β - antimony ( III, V ) are known oxide. At a temperature of 1130 ° C, converts the α - to the β - form. α - antimony ( III, V ) oxide crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with the lattice parameters a = 5.43 Å, b = 4.81 Å and c = 11.78 Å and four formula units per unit cell. The β - form is monoclinic with lattice parameters a = 12.06 Å, b = 4.84 Å, c = 5.38 Å and β = 104.56 °, and four formula units per unit cell.

There lie before SbO5 layers of octahedra, which have a pentavalent antimony atom in the center. These are linked to one another via their vertices. The layers are linked to each other via the trivalent antimony atoms.

Soluble is diantimony tetroxide in concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. In contrast, the compound does not dissolve in water and dilute acids and alkalis.
