Antipope Benedict XIV

Benedict XIV (* around 1370 in southern France, † 1430; actually Bernard Garnier ) was born on November 12, 1425 as one of the two successors of the Antipope Benedict XIII. selected. ( 1423 was Clement VIII as successor Benedict XIII. Selected.)

The choice of Benedict XIV, represents one of the most grotesque and excesses of Gegenpapsttums is: Benedict XIII. had already been declared in 1417 by the Council of Constance in favor of the newly elected Martin V. deposed to end the Schism. This however, refused to accept his dismissal. After his death, could the four of Benedict XIII. appointed cardinals not agree on a common ( antipope ) candidates. The French cardinal Jean Carrier was as a legacy of the previous Pope's move, while his three colleagues already selected Clement VIII in Peniscola on June 10, 1423 as the successor. After his return to Carrier explained with this choice disagrees and raised Bernard Garnier, previously Domkustos in Rodez, the " anti-pope of the Antipope ".

Practical implications had this election not because since the times of Benedict XIII. almost all countries had (except Aragon ) Martin V. recognized as pope. As the end of his pontificate counter, handed down content to nothing about the 1430 is specified.
