Antoine François Marmontel

Antoine François Marmontel (* July 16, 1816 in Clermont- Ferrand, † January 15, 1898 in Paris) was a French composer and music educator.

He studied at the Paris Conservatory with Pierre Zimmermann, Jean -François Lesueur and Fromental Halévy Jacques. From 1848 to 1887, he taught there as a piano teacher. Among his pupils were, among others, Georges Bizet, Vincent d' Indy, Francis Plante, Louis Diémer, Émile Paladilhe, Albert Lavignac, Claude Debussy and Marguerite Long.

Besides Sonatas and Nocturnes he composed mainly Etudes for piano lessons and fifty Salon Etudes for concert use.

His son Antonin Marmontel was known as a pianist, composer and piano teacher.
