Anton Dietrich

Anton Dietrich ( born May 27, 1833 in Meissen, † August 4, 1904 in Leipzig ) was a German painter.

With 14 years of Dietrich came to the Academy of Art in Dresden and there was among other things a pupil of the sculptor Ernst Julius Hähnel. Despite the political situation Dietrich could debut in 1848 with a picture at an exhibition of the Academy.

In the same year the painter Eduard Bendemann took him on as a student in his studio. Supported by this, Dietrich moved after only a short time together with Leonhard Gey in the studio of Julius Schnorr von Carol Field. Since Dietrich despite positive reviews as a freelance artist could not live, he earned his living as an illustrator for various art dealers and publishers.

By Karl Dietrich von Binzer learned the fresco technique and settled in Weimar. There Dietrich discovered for himself the monumental mural, which should be a focus in his art from now on. Later, Dietrich was for a short time master student of Julius Schnorr von Carol Field in Dresden. There was one of the first works to be " Rudolf of Habsburg on the corpse Ottokar of Bohemia ," which was awarded a prize at an exhibition and earned him the great academic travel scholarship.

Through this generous financial support Dietrich was 1859/60 allows a period of study in Dusseldorf. From there he launched into a great trip to Italy, which led him through Venice, Rome and Naples. His return journey he stopped for a stay of several weeks in Munich and returned from there in 1865 back to Dresden.

In Dresden Dietrich founded a studio where one of the first works of his series on " Otto the Great " was born. These pictures were quickly spread through the photography in large numbers. 1868 Dietrich was commissioned to decorate the auditorium of the Cross School in Dresden, with original frescoes; after four years in 1872 Dietrich could successfully finish this work. Another government contract Dietrich took until 1878 to Johanneum to Zittau, where he fresco "St. Paul preaching at the Areopagus in Athens " created. The basis for this Acts 17, verse 22-23. Dietrich took a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig, where he died at the age of 71 years on August 4, 1904.
