Anton Pann

Anton Pann (* 1794-1798 in Sliven, Rumelia, † November 2, 1854 in Bucharest; born Antonie Pantoleon - Petroveanu, Anton Pantoleon or Anton Petrovic ) was a rumänischsprachiger lyricist, composer and musicologist.

Pann came with his family on the run from the Russian-Turkish War of 1812 to Bucharest, where he spent most of his life. Before the rebel troops Tudor Vladimirescus he fled in 1821 to Kronstadt in Transylvania, where he was cantor at St. Nicholas' Church. 1827-28 he was a teacher at the Orthodox Seminary of Râmnicu Vâlcea. In 1828 he returned to Bucharest, where he worked as a music professor.

In the following decade most of his literary and musical work created. From 1842 he was a professor at Seminarul Sf. Mitropolii. During this time he was also active as a collector of classical Ottoman music and the music of the Roma. In 1843 he founded a publishing house, where he published works by contemporary authors, and a large number of the almanac. Here also works as the Alexander Romance, The Arabian Nights and Till Eulenspiegel published.

1848 Penn published a Romanian -Russian- Ottoman dictionary. During the Wallachian Revolution of 1848, he stood on the side of the liberal revolutionaries and supported the Wallachian Provisional Government. In his last years he wrote a number of stories around the figure of Nasreddin Hodja.
