Anton Zimmermann

Anton Zimmermann (c. 25 December 1741 Breitenau, Silesia, † October 1781 in Bratislava ) was an Austrian composer of the pre-classical period.

Life

Zimmermann received his musical training probably in his Silesian homeland. He had an organist at the cathedral in Hradec Kralove. From 1772, he worked in Bratislava. In 1776, Zimmermann was there a permanent position as a " royal court composer " in the service of the Prince Bishop and Primate of Hungary, Count József Batthyány. In 1780 he became organist of the Cathedral. Two of Zimmermann's symphonies have long been attributed to Joseph Haydn, presumably this was done by the oboist of the Esterhazy orchestra, who worked for a year in Bratislava and had dedicated the carpenter, the oboe solos. The C major Symphony was in 1939 printed under Haydn's name.
