Antoni Maria Alcover i Sureda

Antoni Maria Alcover ( born February 2, 1862 in Manacor, † January 8, 1932 in Palma de Mallorca) was a Spanish cleric, writer, linguist, Katalanist, ethnologist, linguist and lexicographer.

Life and work

Alcover was ordained a Catholic priest in 1886 and appointed in 1888 professor of church history at the seminary of Palma de Mallorca. From 1898 to 1902 he was vicar general of the diocese ( and Canon ).

Alcover collected Balearic tale [ rondalles, rondaies ], also a lifetime Catalan words. He laid the foundation stone of the mainly elaborated by his disciple Francesc de Borja Moll total Catalan dictionary Diccionari català - Valencian - balear (known as Alcover / minor ) in 10 volumes. Accompanying he founded the magazine Bolleti del Diccionari de la Catalana llengua. Revista de linguistica, folklore i literatura ( 1902-1936 ).

1906 organized Alcover with Bernhard skull brought the first Congress of the Catalan language, many of the European Romanists to Barcelona and 1907 led to the founding of the Institut d' Estudis Catalans.

Alcovers anthropological, literary, and said overall scientific work earned him the recognition of the professional world ( with which he was traveling contacted ) and the honorary title of " Apostle of the Catalan language " one.

In this town, the Institució Antoni M. Alcover Pública was named after him, which informs about his life's work and a magazine out there.
