Antoni Wit

Antoni Wit ( born 1944 in Kraków ) is a Polish conductor.

Antoni Wit studied conducting at the Music Academy in Krakow Henryk Czyż, composition with Krzysztof Penderecki and law at the Jagiellonian University. He continued his musical training with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He also studied with Stanisław Skrowaczewski and Seiji Ozawa.

In 1967, he began his conducting career at the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra as assistant to Witold Rowicki. With the 2nd place at the International Herbert von Karajan Competition in Berlin in 1971, he began his international career. He was artistic director at the first Pomeranian Philharmonic Orchestra ( 1974-77 ), he was director of the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra in Cracow ( 1977-83 ), the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria ( 1987-92 ) and the National Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio ( 1983-2000 ). Since January 2002 he has been director of the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra.

Wit also been a guest conductor with many major orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra. He recorded more than 90 albums, most of Naxos. He specializes mainly in Polish composers such as Karlowicz, Henryk Gorecki, Wojciech Kilar, Krzysztof Meyer, Witold Lutoslawski and Krzysztof Penderecki.

He currently teaches at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
