Antonín Mrkos

Antonín Mrkos ( born January 27, 1918 in Střemchoví; † 29 May 1996 Prague) was a Czech astronomer.

Life

After school in Dolni Loučky and Gymnasium in Tišnov visit Mrkos completed training in church Pädagogium Svatý Jan pod Skalou. During his studies to the Magisterium Mrkos often visited the Stefanik Observatory and learned there as well as grinding glass lenses. After graduating Mrkos worked as a teacher in Nové Město na Moravě, Skryje and Žďárec. Mrkos was after the Second World War to the teaching profession and worked at the observatory Skalnaté Pleso. At the invitation of Soviet scientists in the 1950s Mrkos took part in a successful half -year expedition to Antarctica, where he studied, among other things Auroras. He then received an invitation to a further expedition. Mrkos was also a member of the Mountain Rescue stit at this time on Lomnický and rescued about 100 people in distress.

In 1965 Mrkos took over the observatory on the Kleť and let them inter alia, expand by installing Maksutov telescopes into a renowned observatory. Mrkos also was a lecturer at the mathematical and physical departments of the Universities of Prague and České Budějovice.

He discovered 13 comets, including 18P/Perrine-Mrkos, and C/1957 P1 124P/Mrkos and 60 asteroids and 275 other objects. Among the planetoid discovered by Mrkos include Horky, Střemchoví, Ruzena and Ludmila.
