Antonino Gandolfo

Antonino Gandolfo ( born October 20, 1841 in Catania, † March 20, 1910 ) was an Italian painter of Sicily.

Life

After an initial training from his uncle, the Portätmaler Giuseppe Gandolfo (1792-1855) in 1860, he went to Florence, where he studied under Stefano Uzzi ( 1822-1901 ) and an amicable relationship with the later Nobel Giosuè Carducci ( 1835-1907 ) recorded.

The end of 1861 he returned to Catania and was first successes with his painting.

Through his friendship with the writers Mario Rapisardi, Giovanni Verga and Luigi Capuana which are considered as the main representative of literary realism, he turned in his genre paintings a socially critical realism and expressive portrait painting.

Antonino Gandolfo taught at the Scuola d' Arte e Mestieri in Catania. He was a teacher by Alessandro Abate.

In 2010, he dedicated the city Aci Castello Palazzo Russo, a comprehensive retrospective on the occasion of the centenary of his death year.
