Antonio Bertali

Antonio Bertali (* March 1605 in Verona, † April 17, 1669 in Vienna) was an Italian- Austrian composer and violinist.

Life

Antonio Bertali studied up to the minor orders in 1623 at the Akolythenschule of Verona. He received from the Director of Music Stefano Bernardi and a violinist named Francesco Lauro His musical education. As early as 1620 he often played in the " Accademia Filarmonica " of Verona, where he received a permanent job beginning 1624. As of April 1625, he joined the imperial service to the Vienna court orchestra, where he Ferdinand III. , Successor of Giovanni Valentini as Kapellmeister in 1649. In January 1631 he married at the Hofburg Chapel, the musician and chamber maid Maria Toppa (around 1617-1666 ). On 2 March 1654 Kaiser Bertali raised in the knightly nobility. He was buried in 1669 in Vienna Minoritenkirche.

Works (selection)

Bertali composed operas, oratorios and instrumental music. With his operas, he was instrumental in the consolidation of the Italian opera tradition in Vienna. About half of his extensive work has been missing in the collections of the Vienna Court Library and in the library of Kremsmünster numerous autographs and copies have been preserved from the hand of Bertali contemporaries Pavel Josef Vejvanovský.
