Antonio Carafa

Antonio Carafa (* 1538 in Naples, † January 13, 1591 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

He was the brother of Carlo Carafa and a member of the Roman Curia. In 1559 he had to leave Rome because Carafa was followed by Pope Pius IV. Carafa went to the Abruzzo, then to Padua, and finally to Naples. When the family Carafa was rehabilitated by Pope Pius V, he returned to Rome. In Padua he studied from 1559 rights, in Naples, he learned from Guglielmo Sirleto Greek.

He was received by Pope Pius V., Cardinal of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in the College of Cardinals in March 1568. 1573 he took over the title Diakonia Santa Maria in Cosmedin. In 1577 he moved to the titular church of Santa Maria in Via Lata and 1583 on the titular church Sant'Eusebio. He was a member of the Commission on the revision of the Vulgate and since 1568 a member and from 1586 Prefect of the Congregation for the Council of Trent. Since 1569 until his death he was prefect of the Signatura de gratia. Carafa took part in the conclave of 1572, Pope Gregory XIII. chose, as the conclave of 1585, which elected Pope Sixtus V, the conclave of September 1590, the Pope Urban VII certain, and finally the conclave of December 1590, the Gregory XIV chose the Pope.

As head of the Congregation for the improvement of the biblical text, and later as Cardinal Librarian of Gregory XIII. He gained the papal decretals and got an improved edition of the Septuagint, which was published in 1587 in Rome and from 1588 also a concerned Flaminius Nobilius Latin translation appeared in Rome.
