Antonio Valente

Antonio Valente (* around 1520 in Naples, † 1600) was an Italian organist, harpsichordist and composer.

Life and work

Antonio Valente worked from 1565 to 1580 as organist of Sant'Angelo à Nilo in Naples. The Dominican monk and organist Alberto Mazza mentioned as editor of Intavolature de Cimbalo in the preface that Valente was blind from birth. His Intravolatura was not as usual in Italian piano score, but in a Spanish Klaviertabulatur ( tablature ) listed. Mazza stressed in the preface the didactic intent of this notation and mentioned that as a musical layman, within a short time the harpsichord could learn. The music theorist Scipione Cerreto, in his publication Della Misica vocal e strumentale (1601 ) a notice that Valente was not born in Naples ..
