Antony Padiyara

Antony Cardinal Padiyara ( born February 11, 1921 in Manimala, Kerala, † 23 March 2000 Kakkanad ) was a Roman Catholic archbishop and cardinal.

Padiyara received on 19 December 1945, the sacrament of Holy Orders and was on 3 July 1955 by Pope Pius XII. appointed bishop of the Diocese of Ootacamund India. He received his episcopal consecration René -Jean- Baptiste- Germain Feuga.

From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council.

On June 14, 1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Archbishop of Changanachcherry; on 23 April 1985, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II appointed Archbishop of Ernakulam. In the consistory of 28 June 1988 he was created cardinal. As a cardinal priest, he received the title Regina Pacis Church in Monteverde.

On December 16, 1992, he became Major Archbishop of Ernakulam- Angamaly and thus head of the Syro -Malabar Church. On November 11, 1996, he resigned for reasons of age.

On March 23, 2000, he died and was in the St. Mary - buried in Cathedral Ernakulam.
