It rises south-east of Unalakleet in the Nulato Hills and flows initially parallel to the Yukon River southward. After a change of direction in the lower reaches it flows eastward near the village of Anvik in these.
The river's name was first documented in the 1840s by LA Sagoskin, a lieutenant in the Imperial Russian Navy, as " R ( eka ) Anvig ".
