Aonio Paleario

Aonio Paleario, actually Aonio della Paglia (* 1500 in Veroli; † July 3, 1570 in Rome ) was an Italian humanist.

Life

Paleario studied in Rome and went to Siena in 1527. 1536 appeared his religious poem " De immortalitate animorum " in Lyon. In 1542, he was accused of having a heretical treatise entitled " Libellus de morte Christ " is written. However, the prosecution did not prevent his calling as a rhetorician to Lucca ( ​​1546-55 ). There he probably wrote his caustic attack on the papacy, " Actio in pontifices romanos et eorum asseclas ". The work first appeared in 1696 in Amsterdam. He was forced to go to Milan, where he was accused by the Inquisition in 1559, but acquitted. After the inauguration of Pope Pius V. ( 1567) he was sent off Milanese inquisitor Fra Angelo Cremona under renewed heretics indictment, and the year after that he was sent to Rome. There he was in two years in prison until he was hanged as unrepentant heretic and burned.
