Veroli

Veroli is a city in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 20,711 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). It is located 93 km east of Rome and 13 km north-east of Frosinone.

Geography

The old town of Veroli with about 3,500 inhabitants situated on a mountain ridge between the valleys of the Sacco and Liri. The municipal area extends from the hill country of Ciociaria to the Monti Ernici where it with the Monte del Passeggio ( 2066 m) has its highest point. Veroli is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Ernici. Most inhabitants live in the valley between the Old Town and Casamari in the districts along the Strada Statale 214

History

The ancient Verŭlae had since the 8th century BC, an important city of Hernici. She was closely associated with Rome and soon went on in the emerging Roman Empire. In the territory of the present municipality was also the ancient city Cereatae.

Since the 4th century Christian church is detected and 743 was Veroli bishopric. 877 it was plundered by the Saracens.

In the dispute between Gregory IX. and Frederick II turned Veroli to the side of the Pope stay and now closely connected with the Vatican. 1350, the city was badly damaged by an earthquake.

In the 16th century Veroli was conquered by the alliance with the Colonna Spaniards. But after that the connections were renewed to the Pope and the city was ruled by cardinals. 1870 was the city with the Papal States and the Kingdom of Italy in 1927 to the newly founded province of Frosinone.

Policy

Giuseppe D' Honorius (center - left coalition ) was elected in June 2004 to the mayor and re-elected in 2009. His center-left alliance also with 14 of 20 seats, the majority in the City Council.

The historic center is divided into three parts. San Leucio extends north to the rocky peaks. The middle area around the Cathedral has many palaces. The lower Santa Croce district is characterized by its steep, narrow streets.

  • The Cathedral of Sant'Andrea of the 12th century was built over the main temple of Verulae. Among the many church treasures is also a silver reliquary of 1291 with a piece of the Holy Cross and a silver bust of the 13th century, containing the head of St. Salome. Until 1861, the so-called Veroli box was kept in the cathedral.
  • The Museo delle Erbe (Herb Museum ) shows 850 plants, mainly from the Monti Ernici.
  • A few kilometers east of the old town is to the Cistercian monastery Casamari, which was built over the ruins of the ancient city Cereatae.
