Atina, Lazio

Atina is an Italian town in Lazio, Frosinone in central Italy with 4421 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 48 km east of Frosinone and 130 km south-east of Rome.

Geography

The old town of Atina is located on a spur of Monte Cairo overlooking the valley of Melfa, north of Cassino. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle di Comino.

History

Atina to have been founded according to legend by Saturnus. It was a town of the Volsci until it was conquered in the Samnite wars of the Romans. Atina became a municipium. It was the origin Plancus family whose most famous member, Lucius Munatius Plancus to have been the founder of Basel and Augusta Raurica.

With the beginning of the Christianization of Atina became a bishop. The first bishop was said to be already in the 1st century of the martyr and patron saint Marcus Galileus. After being destroyed by the Lombards, the town was rebuilt 626 as part of the Duchy of Benevento. In 1349 it was destroyed by an earthquake again and came after reconstruction to the Duchy of Alvito and was part of the Kingdom of Naples.

In 1927 it was annexed from the province of Terra del Lavoro in the newly founded province of Frosinone.
