Ap Lei Chau

Ap Lei Chau (Chinese鸭 脷 洲), or Aberdeen Iceland is an island in Hong Kong and in front of the town of Aberdeen in the southwest of Hong Kong Iceland. It has an area of 1.32 km ² and is part of Southern District. Between the city of Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau are the Aberdeen Channel and the Aberdeen Harbour.

History

Ap Lei Chau served as an excellent shelter from typhoons and was before the First Opium War, a fishing village. As a result of the Treaty of Nanking, the island was ceded along with Hong Kong Iceland in 1841 to the British. Since then, the island has been little attention.

In 1968, the government began to build a power plant on the island, which provides electricity for the whole of Hong Kong Iceland. 1980, a bridge was constructed, the Ap Lei Chau joined with Hong Kong Iceland and thus brought an impetus for rapid economic development on the island.

Geography

Ap Lei Chau was named after the shape of the island that looks like the tongue of a duck. Ap does this duck tongue and Lei Chau island. The northern part has the higher population, the South is not densely populated.

The highest elevation on the island is the Yuk Kwai Shan (Mount Johnston ) with a height of 196 meters.

Ap Lei Chau also lends its name to a geological formation, which covers the majority of Hong Kong Iceland.

With 61,900 people / km ² Ap Lei Chau is the world's island with the second highest population density, according to Santa Cruz del Islote, but before Malé ( island).
