Aphroditopolis Nome

Wadjit ( Schlangengau ) the tenth Upper Egyptian nome was in the national division of Ancient Egypt. The name of the district is attested from the Old Kingdom. The main town was at least since the Middle Kingdom Tjebu, the modern on the east bank of the Nile located Qaw el- Kebir. Here Nemti was worshiped. After this God, the Greeks called the city Antaiopolis and based thereon the Gau Antaiopolites. The princes of the district were buried in the Old Kingdom and the Middle Kingdom at Hemamieh at Qaw el -Kebir.

On the west bank was Per - Wadjit a major city, where the goddess Wadjet was worshiped. This called for the Greeks Aphroditopolis city seems to have won the 3rd and 2nd century BC in importance, after which the whole district Aphroditopolites was called. In Roman times the city Apollonospolis mikra Heptakomia gained in importance and the district was renamed Appolonopolites, where the name Antaiopolites turns up again and it is not entirely clear whether the district was divided. Other villages in Gau - Wadjit were Magab and Minet.
