Apostolic Vicariate of Galapagos

The Apostolic Vicariate of Galápagos was established as Apostolic Prefecture on May 6, 1950 and charged on 15 July 2008 in the rank of the Vicariate. It includes the Galápagos Islands, the eponymous province Galápagos, which consists of 13 large and 17 small and 47 smaller islands in the Pacific Ocean about 1000 km west of the Ecuadorian mainland territory is located.

In 1978 the archipelago was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has 21,000 inhabitants who live on five of the islands and around 150,000 tourists each year visit the nature reserve. Tourism is the main source of income of the local population.

The seat of the administrative and ecclesiastical authorities located on the island of San Cristobal, where the Vicar Apostolic, Bishop, is domiciled. There are roughly about 16,000 Catholics. A total of 10 parishes are served by nine diocesan priests. There are 6 major seminarians and only a lay brother, but 15 religious sisters.
