Band History

The name of the group goes back to 1976 when the quartet was composed. Iolo Jones ( fiddle) and Dave Burns (vocals, guitar ), then worked as a solo artist, with his brother Dafydd Roberts Gwyndaf as a duo (harp, flute). All four were from the Welsh " Committee of the Festival of Interceltic Cornemuses " the invitation to represent Wales at the festival in Lorient and together to play traditional Welsh music. When they appeared there, they were asked by the festival committee to think of a group name that should be " you rent a group " mean in Welsh. The result of this translation was a real tongue twister and therefore not to use. It remained on topic and chose " ar log", which means " to rent ". The goal of Ar Log is closer to Welsh folk and dance music to a wider audience. To achieve this, the Group uses a variety of instruments, including traditional Welsh harp, the triple harp ( triple harp) is called because it has three rows of parallel strings tucked up.

The debut album was eponymous and was well received, but in 1980 led to the resignation of Dave Burns and Iolo Jones. Geraint Glynne Davies ( guitar) and Graham Pritchard ( fiddle, mandolin ) came as a substitute added new. Davies took over Burns singing role, heavily influenced by Freddie Mercury (Queen).

Two albums, Ar Log Ar Log III and II were played by this quartet before the band expanded through access by Stephen Rees (accordion, violin and keyboards). Ar Log could their position in the Welsh folk scene further consolidate through an extensive tour with the well-known traditional artists and famous politician Dafydd Iwan.

Produced two albums, Rhwng Hwyl A Thaith and Yma O Hyd from the two tours with Ivan in the early 80s. In 1983, she released the instrumental album ' Meillionen ' ( trefoil ).

The following year, the album ' Ar Log IV' was recorded, even in the cast with Graham Pritchard, who, however, left the band and was replaced by the returning former band member Iolo Jones. In the composition, then came the album ' Ar Log V '.

With the transition to the 90s also changed the self-understanding of Ar Log. They came now only occasionally, were thus almost purely a ' recreational folk group '.

1996 celebrated its 20th anniversary Ar Log and took this occasion the studio album ' Ar Log VI' on. In 2007, then followed again a best-of - recording, ' Goreuon: The Best of Ar Log'.
