Dafydd Iwan

Dafydd Iwan ( born August 24, 1943 in Brynaman, Carmarthenshire ) is a Welsh singer, entrepreneur and politician. He was president of the nationalist party Plaid Cymru ( Party of Wales) and has been working for decades in his songs and his policies for a free and independent of England Wales.

Dafydd Iwan Jones spent most of his youth in Bala, Gwynedd before attending the University of Wales in Cardiff. During this time he became known as singer-songwriter, who wrote in Welsh folk music and played.

Musical career

Ivan's earliest pieces were Welsh translations of American folk songs and protest singers, including Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan. Soon, however, Dafydd Iwan began to write first own ballads. The best known of these were of a political nature to the investiture of Prince Charles Prince of Wales, he wrote in 1969, for example, the satirical song Carlo ( "Charlie" ).

Self -written love songs and variations of traditional Welsh folk songs were, however, equally to his repertoire.

Public life

Dafydd Iwan was one of the founders of the most important Welsh record label Sain Cyf Recordiau whose business he still heads today.

For his many years of service to the Welsh language, he was appointed honorary member of the Welsh bard Community Gorsedd Ynys Prydain at the National Eisteddfod Beirdd Bangor 1971.

Dafydd Iwan was 2003-2010 president of Plaid Cymru. He was seen as a unifying force in the party, who had to survive in the years before some debilitating divisions.

Dafydd Iwan was until 2008 a member of Plaid Cymru in Gwynedd County Council.
