Aral, Kazakhstan

Aral ( Kazakh Арал / Aral; Russian Аральск / Aralsk ) is a city in south-western Kazakhstan in Kyzylorda region.

History

Aral was founded in 1905 on the railroad Orenburg -Tashkent and was granted town rights in 1938.

Economy

The city was originally a port city on the edge of the Northern Aral Sea and a fish main supplier for neighboring regions. Since the drying up of the Aral Sea, the population has reduced in Aral and lost city of socio - economic importance. The region around the Aral has one of the highest unemployment rates in Kazakhstan. However, there is renewed hope that in the future the lake again reached the harbor of Aral. It is planned to increase the dam at the Kokaral dam and build a second dam. The cost of 126 million dollars will be supported by the World Bank, the Kazakh government has already applied for a construction is not yet in sight.
