Marbled spider (Araneus marmoreus )

The Marbled spider (Araneus marmoreus ) is a member of the genus of spiders (Araneus ).

Features

The length of body is the male 5-9 mm, the female reaches sizes of 9-15 mm. Of the rear body is widest at the center. The color and pattern can vary greatly. The front body, however, is usually light yellow gray, often almost colorless. On the upper side of the front body is mostly a narrow dark longitudinal band. The basic color of the background body is gray or brown. On it are numerous white, yellowish or pale red spots. At the front there is a cross drawing of four bright spots.

With the variety Araneus marmoreus f pyramidatus the abdomen is almost solid white to lemon yellow. In the rear there is a well-defined black spot.

Distribution and habitat

The Marbled Spider preferably moist, shady grounds, such as wetlands, riparian forests or marginal areas of peatlands. In Central Europe, this species is widespread and locally as quite often (eg in Northern Germany ).

Way of life

Araneus marmoreus expanding its bicycle network mostly between low bushes or tall herbs. During the day it hides in a well-camouflaged hiding place next to the power. The network of marbled spider is very resistant. In it, she can also catch large insects (eg Heupferde ). Mature animals are available from August to October.
