Ararat Province

Ararat (Armenian Արարատի մարզ transcription: Ararati Mars = Province Ararat ) is a province in the southwest of Armenia with the provincial capital Artashat. The province has an area of 2,096 km ² and a population of 252 665 (2002 ).

The word comes from the Persian Arta Artashat Schad ( Arta = honest and malicious = happy, friendly ). Until the beginning of the 20th century Armenia was culturally and politically under Persian and Iranian influence. So were many cities in Armenia Persian name.
