Araucaria columnaris is a plant of the genus Araucaria (Araucaria ). She comes to the south and west of New Caledonia endemic.

Description

Araucaria columnaris growing as evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 60 meters. The crown is shaped more or less conical. The gray, papery bark peels off in thin strips. The trunk is in the lower part unbeastet first and, with increasing age of short branches. The branches have a diameter from 0.9 to 1 centimeter.

In young specimens the leaves are needle-like and have a incurved tip. They are lanceolate at a length of 4 to 7 millimeters and a width of 2 to 3 millimeters. On older trees scale-like leaves with a length of 5 to 7 mm and a width of 3 to 5 millimeters are the overlapping like roof tiles, acute or obtuse triangular with a curved- top and an indistinct midrib.

The male cones are oval to cylindrical in shape, with a length of 5 to 10 centimeters and a diameter of 1.5 to 2.2 centimeters. They contain top Mikrosporophylle with ten pollen sacs. Occurrence

Araucaria columnaris thrives at altitudes between 0 and 50 meters. They settled mostly dense, moist evergreen forests. It is the only Araucaria species in New Caledonia, which also grows on calcareous soils. On the Isle of Pines it also occurs on soils that develop on coral.

Araucaria columnaris is occasionally planted as an ornamental tree.
