Archduchess Maria Beatrix of Austria-Este

Maria Beatrix Anna Franziska of Austria -Este ( born February 13, 1824 in Modena, † March 18, 1906 in Graz) was an Archduchess of Austria -Este and Princess of Modena by marriage and Infanta of Spain and Countess of Montizón.

Life

Maria Beatrix was the youngest daughter of Duke Francis IV of Modena (1779-1846) from his marriage to Maria Beatrix (1792-1840), daughter of King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia.

She married on 6 February 1847 Spanish Infante Juan Carlos de Borbón ( 1822-1887 ), who appeared as Count of Montizón since 1860 as a Spanish pretender to the throne. The couple lived in Modena, but fled in 1848 before the revolution to England.

Maria Beatrix was considered extremely conservative and pious, and soon fell into contradictions to her liberal husband. The couple separated in 1850. Maria Beatrix returned to Modena. After her husband was mentally ill and their sons grow up, Maria Beatrix in 1872 entered under the name of Sister Mary Ignatia of the Sacred Heart in the Carmelite monastery in Graz, where she also died and was buried.

Maria Beatrix was awarded the Star Cross Order.
