Archduke Franz Salvator of Austria

Archduke Franz Salvator of Austria - Tuscany ( born August 21, 1866 in Altmünster, † April 20, 1939 in Vienna) from the House of Habsburg- Lorraine ( line of Habsburg-Lorraine - Tuscany) was Archduke of Austria and officer.

Life

The Archduke was baptized with the full name Franz Salvator Maria Joseph Ferdinand Karl Leopold Anton von Padua Johann Baptist Januarius Aloys Gonzaga Rainer Benedikt Bernhard of Austria - Tuscany. Franz Salvator was the son of Archduke Karl Salvator of the Tuscan branch of the Habsburg and his wife Maria Immaculata of the Two Sicilies.

After studying at the Theresa Academy was Franz Salvator 1881 lieutenant of Uhlans Regiment No. 6, was in 1895 when the Emperor hunters and then moved to the cavalry. In 1911 he was appointed general of the cavalry and was last Commander of the Cavalry Division in Vienna. During the First World War, Franz Salvator served between 1914 and 1918 as inspector general of voluntary medical care and was Deputy Protector of the Red Cross in Austria and Hungary.

Family

Franz Salvator married on July 31, 1890 in Ischl, the youngest daughter of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, the Archduchess Marie Valerie ( 1868-1924 ). They had ten children:

Franz Karl (1893-1918), the eldest son, died unmarried and childless. Clemens Salvator (1904-1974) declared after the First World War, his resignation from the House of Habsburg - Lorraine, received the title of Prince of Altenburg, thus founding a new family, the noble family of Altenburg.

The marriage, which was harmonious in the beginning, became worse with time, and Franz Salvator began to look for other women to look. He had an affair with Princess Stephanie zu Hohenlohe (1891-1972), also known as " Hitler's spy " and with it, an illegitimate son, Franz Josef to Hohenlohe (* 1914), which he recognized in his lifetime Valerie.

In 1934, 10 years after Marie Valerie's death, married Franz Salvator of Melanie Risenfels ( 1898-1984 ), daughter of the last Baron of Risenfels.
