Archeon (Netherlands)

Archeon is a private sector " archeological theme park " in Alphen in the west of the Netherlands.

History

Archeon was opened in 1994. It was at that time surrounded by large open spaces, which contributed to the ambiance of the park and should be built upon later. However, it did not succeed to the park to meet the initial high expectations of visitor numbers.

When the park had to overcome a financial bottleneck, became a part of the open spaces and the main building, which had served in 1992 as a Dutch pavilion at the World Exhibition, sold. After the sale of the land the Archeon is now in the vicinity of residential areas, so that from some perspectives "old" and new gable facing in high-contrast image.

Eras and building

In Archeon replicas are visible from buildings that are in the Netherlands and whose remains have been found here. The three great epochs are the prehistory, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. Prehistory in the Park covers the period 6000-12 BC and is in turn divided into several sub- periods, such as the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. The medieval department consists of a group of buildings that represents the time in 1150, and from the fictional town Gravendam to 1350.

Care

The park is the Visitors of archeotolken declared (Dutch tolk: interpreters). These are employees or volunteers who represent professional groups an epoch in the appropriate clothing. Examples are the Roman pottery, the monks who sing in the medieval monastery, the beekeeper and the minstrels. This type of museum education is part of the " Living History ".

Events and Catering

The daily program provides for regular events, such as concerts, presentations and at the end of the day gladiator battle in the arena. For children there is archery, Knight and Legionnaire Games, Writing with feathers and various crafts.

The Roman and medieval area are associated with catering establishments which can also be rented for parties. From time to time, especially during the summer months, Foreign lay groups present that are associated with an era or a subject (" reenactment " ), as a Roman Legion.
