Archibald Douglas, 1st Duke of Douglas

Archibald Douglas, 1st Duke of Douglas ( * 1694, † July 21, 1761 in Queensberry House, Edinburgh) was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

Archibald was a son of James Douglas, 2nd Marquess of Douglas, and his second wife Mary Kerr. He succeeded his father in 1700 as Marquess of Douglas. In 1703 he was raised to the Duke of Douglas. During the Jakobitenaufstandes from 1715 he was on the side of the government and helped in the suppression. He fought there in the Battle of Sheriffmuir on 13 November 1715.

The Duke fled to Holland after he had put to death in 1725 John Ker on Douglas Castle in unexplained circumstances. After 1755 Douglas Castle was burnt down, it was the Duke under the direction of Robert Adam to rebuild. The construction work was not yet completed at the death of the Duke.

Since Douglas had no children from his marriage, the Dukedom became extinct again. The older title Earl of Angus and Marquess of Douglas fell after years of wrangling to James Douglas - Hamilton, 7th Duke of Hamilton, as Archibald had determined in his will to his nephew Archibald his heir.
