Archibald Douglas, 1st Earl of Ormond

Archibald Douglas, 1st Earl of Ormonde ( * ca 1609, † April 16, 1655 in Edinburgh) was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

Douglas was the son of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas, and his first wife Margaret Hamilton. He served in the Scottish offices of a Privy Counsellor and Extraordinary Lord of Session. From his brother, he also took over the leadership of Douglas Regiment in France, but still lived mostly in Scotland.

1651 Archibald was raised to Earl of Ormonde; in the title of his father, however, he could not follow, as he died five years before this.

Progeny

Douglas was married twice. First, he married Anne (1614-1646), daughter of Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox, by whom he had one son:

He married his second wife, Jean (1634-1715), daughter of David Wemyss, 2nd Earl of Wemyss, with her he had two children:

  • Margaret (1651-1699), married Alexander Seton, 1st Viscount Kingston
  • Archibald Douglas, 1st Earl of Forfar, 2nd Earl of Ormonde ( 1653-1712 )
