Areia Branca beach and hinterland

The Areia Branca ( Portuguese for White sand, Pasir Putih formerly ) is a beach on the eastern end of the Bay of Dili, the capital of East Timor. According to him also the district is named, which adjoins the beach. Areia Branca is located about 3 km east of the city center, in the Suco Meti Aut ( subdistrict Cristo Rei). The white-yellow beach is a popular destination for residents of Dili and the few tourists in the country. Along the coastline there are some restaurants and hotels. At the eastern end of the Bay is located at the Capa Fatu Cama, the 27 -meter-high statue of Jesus Christ of Dili.

Wildlife Reserve

Together with its hinterland, which consists of hills with savanna and wetlands, the Areia Branca is a wildlife refuge and an Important Bird Area. The eucalyptus species ( Eucalyptus alba) here make some small tropical dry forests (Eucalyptus alba savana ), but which are threatened by collecting firewood. Together with the areas of Tibar (District Liquiçá ) Tasitolu, Hera and Metinaro (all District Dili ) makes this region a network of small wetlands.
