Arithmeum

The Arithmeum is an exhibition building at the Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics, University of Bonn, which is used for communication of scientific and technical facts. The name represents a composite of the terms " arithmetic " and " Museum " dar. It was founded by the Director of the Institute Bernhard Korte, who brought his private collection of calculators here. In 2008 among 4500 calculators, 2000 books, 800 works of art and historic 500 computers to the collection. The building is located on the southwest corner of the Hofgarten.

Building

The museum building was equipped with a steel and glass facade with the intention that clarify to " transparency of science". Additional shade elements and escape balconies make the transition to the surrounding airspace.

The building expresses a symbiosis of science, technology and art.

Exhibitions

The permanent exhibition "computing then and now " provides illustrative examples of the development of machine arithmetic. On show will be historic calculators and computer aids such as the abacus, historical arithmetic books or the legendary Enigma cipher machine from the Second World War, as well as nautical and astronomical measuring tools. Another focus exhibits from the beginning of the computer age, such as the punch card machine by Herman Hollerith. The museum's founder himself had been involved in the development of modern logic chips.

The permanent exhibition is supplemented by regularly scheduled concerts, such as the well-established since 2006 series " concerto discreto " with the winners of the promotional Germany radio as well as changing exhibitions of geometric- constructive visual artists from around the world. The museum's art collection includes works by Max Bill, Camille Graeser, Richard Paul Lohse, Charmion von Wiegand and other representatives of the concrete painting.
