Armagetron Advanced

Armagetron is the name of a computer game, the gameplay comes from the movie Tron and was released as open source under the GPL version 2. The game, which only very little storage space and is shown three -dimensional, requires the player above all, very much skill and good reflexes.

The development of the original Armagetron has now been set and replaced by armagetronad ( Armagetron Advanced). The main difference is primarily in the display of a head- up display that represents speed, opponents and other live displays to the game. armagetronad runs on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.

The name of the game is derived from the words of Armageddon and Tron.

Original gameplay

The player controls in Armagetron a virtual motorcycle ( light cycle ) on a grid-like pitch. The size of the field is adjustable, in the current version of armagetronad more than 30 players can play simultaneously on the network ( LAN or Internet). The Light Cycles pull in the game walls ( trails ) behind it, which are impenetrable for the vehicles and result in collision to removal of each player.

By default, the game, the Light- Cycles can only turn at right angles. The speed depends on the distance to other or own walls: the closer one moves parallel to a trail, the greater the acceleration. Depending on the setting of the server, the Light- Cycles can also slow down but not stop. The goal is now to the opponents as to obstruct the way that this does not find a way out and lack the ability to hold up against the boundaries of the field or drive an energy wall must and will be destroyed. The player wins when all opponents are destroyed.

Newer modes

With version 0.2.8.0 the possibility was created of turning at any angle and play in other types of arenas ( not necessarily a square playing area ). New game modes such as " Fortress" and " race " ( "Race" ) offer additional variety; with " race " players for example, seek to drive through a maze - like structure ( maze ) as quickly as possible. Armacycles Advanced Armagetron Advanced is the name for the Linux distribution Fedora. This name exists, because Red Hat wished to avoid a possible trademark infringement through the use of the name Tron.

Multiplayer

Armagetron is network capable and has an ever-growing online community. Due to the growing popularity of Fortress and the various possibilities for the configuration of servers regular tournaments have emerged, for example the so-called Ladle and the team Sumo Tournament.
