Armenian Cathedral of Lviv

The Armenian Cathedral in Lviv (Armenian Հայկական տաճար, Ukrainian Вірменський кафедральний собор / Wirmenskyj kafedralnyj Sobor ) is a church in the Polish Armenians in Lviv.

It was built in the 14th century in the Armenian Quarter of Lviv from Silesia builder Doring modeled after the Cathedral of Ani in the former capital of Armenia. The building was donated by the Armenian Jacob, son of Schachinschach from Kaffa, and Panos, son of Abraham.

The cathedral was built in three stages:

  • The presbytery as a cross-domed church with a twelve-sided drum in the 14th century;
  • The nave with coffered vault in the 17th century;
  • The extension of the nave with the hall in the 19th century.

On the southern courtyard at the Armenian Street ( Вул. Вірменська ) is the old cemetery with grave plates with partially weathered Armenian inscriptions and a chapel with a wooden figure of Christ. The cloister was built in the late 15th century. On the eastern courtyard is a column ( 1726) with the figure of Saint Christopher. The northern courtyard adjacent to the Armenian Convent ( 1682). The Tower (1571 ) was rebuilt in the 19th century.

In the 20s of the 20th century created the painter Jan Henryk Rosen, the son of Jan roses, wall murals. 1945-2001 the cathedral was closed by the Soviet authorities and served as a camp for church furniture from other closed religious buildings. The members of the Armenian ethnic group Lviv belonged to the Catholic church of the Armenian rite that recognizes the primacy of the Roman Pontiff. These Armenians were 1945-1946 forced to leave Lviv and settle in Wroclaw and other cities of Poland's new western territories.

2001, the Cathedral of the autocephalous Armenian Apostolic Church was passed. The renovation of the cathedral was begun in 2009 and financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The renovation of the church tower and parts of the cemetery supported the city of Lviv financially.
