Armenian Genocide Monument in Nicosia

The Armenian Genocide Monument Nicosia, is a memorial in the Cypriot capital Nicosia, dedicated to the martyrs and survivors of the genocide of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire 1915-1923.

It is located within the Armenian building complex on the Armenia - road in Acropolis, Strovolos, which the Armenian prelature, the Surp Asdvadzadzin Cathedral, the Armenian Nareg School, the marble khachkar, the bust of the Archbishop Zareh Aznavorian and the statue of Gregory comprises of Narek.

Construction

The construction of the monument was made by the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus, to have a permanent memorial to the genocide of the Armenians in the Armenian Street. The establishment of the monument took place in 1985, the 70th anniversary of the genocide, but there was at that time no timetable for the construction of the monument.

1989 chose the Armenian Prelature one of two formats that have been submitted by famous painter and architect John Guevherian, and the construction began in the spring of 1990. It includes three marble arches, representing Armenia, the Armenian diaspora and Armenians in the Soviet Union. In the middle of the central arch is a created by the famous sculptor Levon Tokmajian black granite cross; Tokmajian was commissioned as a guest on Melkonian Educational Institute with the creation of a series of busts of Armenian history and writing. The marble monument is located on a raised marble base and has from left to right in each case a Greek, Armenian and English inscription.

Inauguration

The genocide memorial was opened on 24 April 1992 in the presence of a large number of commemorative ends of Senior Archimandrite Yeghishe Mandjikian. In 1996, some human remains of the martyrs of genocide by Armenian Relief Society of the delegation from Markade, desert of Deir ez -Zor, buried in the monument. 2000 more skeletons were placed within two relics, built by donations from families and Eghoyian Tembekidjian, and surrounded by five khachkar -like columns which were built by the donations of Anahid The Movsessian.
