The rural community Árnes ( Isl Árneshreppur ) is an Icelandic community in the region Vestfirðir in northwestern Iceland.

On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 49 inhabitants. This makes it the smallest municipality by population in Iceland.

Places

The now abandoned place Gjögur on Reykjarfjörður was a major fishing port in the 19th century. Today there is an airport, which is regularly serviced twice per week from Reykjavík.

In Djúpavík where 1935-1954 a significant herring factory was operated today is a privately run hotel.

Other places are Norðurfjörður the same fjord and the bathroom Krossnes.

Population Development

The decline in population between 1997 and 2005 was 32%.
