Arnold Schoenberg Choir

History

Erwin Ortner gathered in the parish of St. Othmar under the white tanners in Vienna's Landstrasse a small circle of peers around, which later became the youth choir and then 1968, the Chamber Choir of St. Othmar with which he as a 21 -year-old second place at Choir Competition in Spittal an der Drau occupied. 1971, the Spittal competition was won. Finally, the chorus the name Arnold Schoenberg in 1972 to the choir.

The choir maintains always an active collaboration with Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Honors and Awards

Under the direction of Erwin Ortner the entire secular choral works of Franz Schubert was recorded on 7 CDs, among others in 1996. This recording was awarded the Prize of the German Record Critics, France with the Diapason d'Or, in Belgium, the Prix Caecilia, and in Japan with the Grand Prize of the Academy Awards in 1997.

2001 the choir received a Grammy Award in the category "Best Choral Performance " for the recording of JS Bach's St. Matthew Passion with Harnoncourt. 2007, the Vienna Festival production was chosen House of the Dead by Leos Janacek with the Arnold Schoenberg Choir for the best performance of the year 2007 in all opera productions in Germany.
